The Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Hillsville Historic District. It is a beautiful five-story house with 34 rooms that adorns the street of Hillsville, Virginia.
The Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home was a Federal-style brick home built in 1845 that initially belonged to Fielden Hale. It began as a two-story home with 16 acres. In 1880 Mr. Hale sold the house and land to entrepreneur James Wilkinson. In 1895 George Carter married Mr. Wilkinson’s daughter, Mayetta. George and Mayetta spent over $250,000 in 1906 adding a 3rd and 4th floor to the home, and a wraparound porch and stucco.
In the early 1900’s, the Farmer’s Bank was located on the bottom floor of the house in one of the rooms near the front. A Drug Store was also located on the same floor near the front.
George and Mayetta’s only son, James, sold the Carter mansion to Carroll County in 1959 for $60,000. The county used the house as office space until 1999. Currently, the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home is open to the public as a gathering place for cultural, social, and family events. An Art gallery, “The Gallery’, is located on the bottom floor and showcases amazing talent of local artists.
